See the instruction - Essay Example nked to this area has the agreement of the Russian elites, and finally because conflicts in Middle East have sensitive implications for Russia’s domestic problems (Ehteshami 66). The G. Bush administration was capable of rallying the military industrial complex, the oil lobby and the Zionist movement in a huge project: to secure a control of the oil fields that run from the Horn of Africa to the Caspian Sea by re-designing the political map on basis of small ethnic states. The region, demarcated not for its populace but for the reserves under its soil, was initially called â€Å"Crescent Crisis† by Bernard Lewis, a University professor and later George W. Bush called it â€Å"Greater Middle East† (Halliday 13). Washington did not hold back on its Middle East â€Å"re-modeling† project. Huge sums of finances were invested in hiring local elites so as their personal interests would be before national interests in the globalized economy context. Most significant was the deployment of a vast military force to Iraq and Afghanistan in order to interrupt Iran, the main actor around the region that outlooks up to the empire. The maps of the region were drawn up and distributed by the Chiefs of General Staff. Every country in the region, including US allies, could be viewed being broken up into innumerable emirates, incapable of protecting themselves, while overpowered Iraq would get divided into 3 federate states ( a Sunni, a Shiite, a Kurdish) imposed by the White House (Ehteshami 23). When it appeared that nothing could stop that domination process from moving forward, the Pentagon handed Israel a task of destroying every secondary fronts before they attacked Iran. The aim was to end the Lebanese Hezbollah and overthrowing the Syrian government. Nevertheless, after submitting a third of the territory of Lebanon under a shelling campaign the likes that which had never been seen before since the Vietnam War, the Israelis were forced to retreat without attained any of its

Sigmund Freud Essay Example for Free

Sigmund Freud Essay Carl Jung worked with Sigmund Freud, who assumed the unconscious mind was a personal thing within an individual . But Carl Jung saw the unconscious mind as the inherited part of the human psyche that could not be developed from personal experience. The collective unconscious is expressed through archetypes, which are universal symbols and thoughts that influence the way we express our emotions and actions. Its the way we connect with each other and understand things. Archetypes are recurring plot patterns, images, descriptive detail, and characters that are expressed in stories, dreams and religions. The unconscious emotions in ourselves are evoked when we recognize these archetypes. Nature vs. Mechanical World This type of plot pattern is used to show that nature is good rather than technology and society which are seen as bad. Nature represents purity and good, while technology represents evil and corruption. The Ritual The ritual marks a translations to a new role in society. An example of this is the sorting hat that is used in Harry Potter to initiate the students in one of the four houses. A ritual in Hamlet would be Claudius and Gertrudes wedding because it lets us know that Claudius is the new king and shows Claudius new role in society. Symbols Symbols such as black cats that represent bad luck and four leaf clovers that represent good luck are universal and helps an audience understand events in a story. For example the use of the snake venom used to kill the old king makes us connect that to the story of Adam and Eve because we see a snake as someone who causes trouble. Comedy Follows the plot of a story from going to an undesirable state to a desirable state. Tragedy The opposite of comedy; going from a desirable state to an undesirable state. Darkness Darkness is associated with the unknown and a sense of despair. It brings an eerie mood to the setting. In Hamlet, the ghost appears at night in the wilderness where its foggy, tying these three archetypes together to have an ever greater impact. This archetype of darkness is portrayed in the Lion King. Mufasa tells Simba everything the light touches is our kingdom. which also shows their power. The difference between Mufasa and Scars land is that Scars land is shown to be dark, dusty, and empty, relfecting his persona. While Mufasas land is full of light, reflecting Mufasas good personality. The Unfaithful Wife Described as someone who is in a relationship who has feelings for someone else. Gertrude is the prime example for this because of this quote: O God, a beast that wants discourse of reason][Would have mournd longer married with my uncle,][My fathers brother [She married O most wicked speed! To past][With such dexterity to incestuous sheets! ][It is not, nor it cannot come to good. ] Hamlet lets the audience see Gertrude as an unfaithful wife because we feel pity for him due to the fact that it actually would be horrible kowing your mom married some other guy after your dad died. The ghost also portrays Gertrude as an unfaithful wife by saying: O wicked wit, and gifts that have the power][So to seduce! won to his shameful lust][The will of my most seeming-virtuous queen. The unfaithful wife archetype is seen throughout many other stories, movies, and even real life situations. If you look at any teen angst shows there is always a couple where the boyfriend/girlfriend fall for someone else while in the relationship. Most people find nothing wrong with this kind of person cheating because we all have that unconscious thought that makes us root for the underdog. Perfect Woman Is the character in stories that the main character falls in love with. Isnt necessarily a woman, it can be a man or even something that just brings out the best in the hero. I feel that Ophelia starts out as the perfect woman, seeing as her and Hamlet have a relationship, but it ends due to Hamlet going crazy. You can questions whether she is the perfect woman for Hamlet because if they were perfect together they wouldnt have had such a tragic ending. Death Is the antagonist blocking the heros path. Every story has some sort of antagonist whether it may be another person or even a personal conflict that the hero is trying to overcome. Claudius is seen as the antagonist to Hamlet and is also attempting to stop Hamlet from revealing anything about the murder Claudius committed.

Female Authors In 1940s America English Literature Essay

Female Authors In 1940s America English Literature Essay The early forties in American history was a time in which people were less tolerant of anything outside of what society had deemed proper. As our country experienced many great tragedies-the injustice of which was the inspiration for many of Shirley Jacksons stories-Jackson emerged as one of the most controversial authors in American history. Female writers were still trying to make an impact on the literary world, and many literary outlets were critical of the work that women published. Jacksons style of writing challenged the conservative ways that were practiced by many in the 1940s and made her stories notable works of fiction. Jacksons use of irony, symbolism, and foreshadowing propel her stories forward and help to ensnare the reader into a theme of frightening yet alluring anecdotes, especially in her story The Lottery. Set in a small New England town, The Lottery is an ironic story of human injustice that perpetuates the archaic tradition of stoning one member of the community every year to guarantee a good harvest. Jackson uses irony to turn this seemingly innocent day of small town camaraderie into something much more sinister and horrific. The scene opens on a bright and sunny day with children gathered in the town square where their parents soon join them. There is a feeling of anticipation as the townspeople congregate in the center of town and begin to seek out the faces of those who have yet to arrive. When Mr. Summers, the grand master of the event, says, guess we better get started, get this over with, sos we can go back to work (Jackson 215), it is a form of verbal irony found throughout the story that gives the impression that this community event is extremely mundane and the villagers just want to complete the task and return to their work. Another character, Mrs. Hutchinson, comes onto the scene, obviously in a hurry fearing that she might be late. This occurrence leads the reader to believe that this is a coveted event, and everyone wants to be in attendance. The contrast in the meaning of these two statements makes it difficult to determine whether the crowd is excited about the event-as first implied by the atmosphere in the opening scene-or just ready to have it over and done with, so they can continue with their day. Jacksons use of symbolism is another tactic that she uses to create an uneasy feeling as the reader draws nearer to the climax of the story. For most of the story, the focus is on setting up the scene with the illusion of happy children playing and their parents joining them in the center of town. Jackson spends a great deal of time explaining the history of the lottery and the condition and preparation of the inauspicious black box that is being placed on a three legged stool by Mr. Summers. There is not much said about the actual lottery and what it represents nor is there much told about the emotions of the people until the drawing begins. In an article written by Joan Hall, the three legged stool could be interpreted as the Greek tripod of prophecy and the black box as a representation of Pandoras Box of woes. This interpretation gives a meaning to these two objects, providing the reader with an alternate interpretation or a new lens with which to view the events of The Lottery. There are many tactics that writers can use to delay the readers awareness of what is truly going on in the story. Jacksons purposefully vague use of foreshadowing makes the reader believe that one thing is happening, but as the story progresses, these small bits of information give the reader pause to contemplate the subtle hints of a more sinister reality. The hesitation of the men, when Mr. Summers asks, Some of you fellows want to give me a hand?(Jackson 214), shows that there is some trepidation about the box. Jackson is careful not to imply too much early on in the story that may give away the ending. The citizens of this small town come together and participate willingly in a tradition that they already know will result in the death of a friend or family member. Jackson cleverly disguises the hesitation that many of the townspeople must feel at the prospect of a loved ones death. The snipets of conversation going on around the scene seem to be casual and lighthearted, until th e conclusion of the story nears and the reader wonders if those instances are just nervous actions. Many of Jacksons stories were not published in her lifetime. Stanley Edgar Hyman-Jacksons husband-put together a collection of her unfinished works and published them one year after her death of heart failure in 1965 at the age of 45 (Bloom). Jacksons style of writing has, however, made her works significant and well- read because, as Janet Ball says in her biography of Ms. Jackson, whether the theme is dark or lightà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦.she mastered the technique of presenting the ordinary in an extraordinary way. Jackson presents to the reader entertaining stories with attention-grabbing plots. The Lottery is one of the most controversial of Ms. Jacksons stories because of the explicit conclusion that shocks the reader and ends before the reality of what just happened is clear. The injustice that is the fate of Ms. Hutchinson depicts the thoughtless perpetuation of evil traditions that made The Lottery so widely read (Ball). Jackson has mastered the art of applying irony to her stories t o keep the reader guessing at the actual meaning of this vicious tale. The use of symbolism that Jackson utilizes to give the story a more in-depth meaning requires knowledgeable contemplation. Jackson provides a great deal of background information about the box and makes a point to let the reader see the reaction of the characters when asked to assist with the box. The most elusive of Jacksons techniques is her deliberately vague use of foreshadowing, which gives the story an illusion of a tranquil and normal setting, belying the wickedness of the reality that emerges at the tales shocking culmination.

The Picture Behind The Story :: essays research papers

The motivation in an individual is of great concern in becoming an well-educated person. I know that from my fathers' "childhood" stories that self-motivation and motivation from relatives are what help individuals to learn and prosper in their lives. My father didn't have any of this when he was younger. His motivation and energy were directed in another direction, the path to " I Don't Care Land". I believe that he still had in his heart somewhere the curiosity and the open-mindedness of a child like ambition. My father left home when he was sixteen, he had to get himself together just to survive out in the world. If my father hadn't realized that he had to shape-up and get thing together he would have never gotten where he is today. When that childlike ambition broke threw my father he knew what he had to do, with this I'm proud to say my father went back to get his GED to further is education. As the great Hellen Keller once said " Character cannot b e developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved." You have to pull yourself out of the gutter and keep on going as any well knowledgeable person would know. Next is the ability too direst and assist the learning process. Before the invention of reading and writing, people lived in an environment in which they struggled to survive against natural forces, animals, and other humans. Through direct, informal education, parents, elders, and priests taught children the skills and roles they would need as adults. In doing this they taught an ability to be direct and to assist in the process of a better knowledgeable person. Education developed from the human struggle for survival and enlightenment. It may be formal or informal. Informal education refers to the general social process by which human beings acquire the knowledge and skills needed to function in their culture. Formal education refers to the process by which teachers instruct students in courses of study within institutions. I know also, through my fathers’ stories, that even thought you are learning at school the best way to be an well-

Accounting Information Systems Simulation Paper Essay

Internal controls are all measures taken by an organization for the purposes of protecting its resources against waste, fraud, or inefficient use; ensuring the reliability of accounting data; securing compliance with management policies; and evaluating the performance of all employees, managers and departments within the organization. The accounting system depends upon internal control procedures to ensure the reliability of accounting data. Many internal control procedures on the other hand make use of accounting data in keeping track of assets and monitoring the performance of departments. Internal control is looked upon more and more as a solution to a variety of potential problems. The effectiveness and efficiency of operations as a technique relates to performance and profitability goals and safeguarding of resources. The Accounting Information System Simulation made me realize that there is an advantage having one person control multiple activities. The disadvantage of having the same person performing multiple activities is having in a process increases if one person has the opportunity to control more then one step of the process. This risk is even more if the person controls consecutive steps because there is no intermediary to check that the steps are not manipulated for personal gains. The separation of duties activity aims to minimize risk by separating the steps of a process in such a way that different person are recording transactions, authorizing them and maintaining custody of assets. The simulation solution was that access cards were the best solution. In the stimulation I chose to have the hand clock in machine. Having employees clocking in through the hand machine may be degrading to employees, but at the same time make sure that employees do not have other employees clocking in for them. Some of those hand clocks in machines have little cameras that take a picture every time an employee clocks in or out. Roles of Government essays

Roles of Government essays The size and role of government are two very important factors, and can be difficult to pin point exactly. The role of government plays a huge part in society, by establishing all sorts of standards for living. Standards for things like monitoring of our hospitals, food industries, environment, human behavior, and even out burials. So you can say government has been there regulating and controlling parts of our lives from our birth to our death. United States government has always played a large role throughout history, ever since the creation of the U.S. Constitution. The size of government has been decreasing greatly as our economy has been increasing. The balance in America now lies between the public and the private sectors, with the private sector doing more of the spending. The private sector is businesses of firms owned by individuals or shareholders. Large businesses like IBM and Microsoft are examples of the private sector. These corporations sell goods and services like cars and computers, or haircuts and dry cleaning. The public sector includes the following; executive office, legislative bodies, courts, and administrative agencies at 3 different government levels, the federal, state, and local levels. They are owned by government and are run by elected and appointed officials. They are funded mostly through taxes and the issuing of bonds. Examples of this include the military, state motor vehicle agencies, and city fire departments. These companys deliver goods and services that can not be owned by any one single person, like environmental protection. Now that we know what the private and public sectors are we can begin to discuss the balance. The balance of the government now accounts for less then one third of the national economy. Two thirds of this amount is the general spending, or about 18% of the GDP. Total federal spending, is the 18 percent of the full 28 percent that government spen...
